Charles has worked in professional, educational, and community theatre for over 35 years and has contributed to over 175 productions as a director, performer, scenic designer, technical director, or producer. He previously served as a board member for Placer Community Theater in Auburn, California, for four years. For Placer Community Theater, he directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Godspell, Almost, Maine, The Producers, and Guys and Dolls and produced Harvey, Mary Poppins, The Wedding Singer, Oklahoma!, Nunsense, Barefoot in the Park, and Steel Magnolias. Prior directing credits include Schoolhouse Rock Live!, It’s Only a Play, Jake’s Women, The Diviners, and The Long Christmas Dinner. Charles has received seven Elly nominations and one Elly award for his scenic design for Les Miserables.
In addition to his work in the Sacramento region, Charles has worked with nationally recognized companies including Opera San Jose, The Western Stage, PCPA Theaterfest, and Berkeley Opera. For three years he produced and directed off-Loop theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
A graduate of the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts, Charles worked extensively in the Bay Area and Chicago before moving to Sacramento in 2007. He holds a Master of Science in Education from Drexel University and works as a trainer for FPI Management, one of the largest property management companies in the country.
